Lost internet connectivity on Friday morning. Odd thing is that I was getting an IP address from DHCP along with default route and nameservers. I could ping the gateway address and two other machines (presumably other customers) on that segment but nothing past the gateway.
Called flow CSR. They had me do the reboot modem, disconnect router and connect direct to PC routine. Asked the usual questions about antivirus and firewall (even after I specifically told them I could ping the gateway). Said they would email superiors.
That evening I called again. Same procedure (connecting directly to modem).Same questions about antivirus. Asked about trying google in web browser. I pointed out that even a numeric address would not work since nothing was getting past the gateway.
Called on Saturday morning. Same routine.
Called this afternoon and got someone with a bit more sense. Noticed that the ip address didn't change after reboot and asked me if I had another machine I could connect the modem to. Connected laptop to modem.
Bingo. Got an IP from a different pool. One that worked. Seems the modem has associated the mac addresses of both my router and desktop pc with ip addresses from a non working pool.
I asked him if he could clear the mac-ip association. Said he could not do that now but would pass the information higher up for action. Told me I could use the laptop for the connection but didn't know how I could share it.
Well of course I just cloned the MAC address of my laptop on to the router. Problem solved for now.
