Crap?
I think it's stupid as well, but then again they can't sell 850/1800 dual band phones until the 850 band is launched then they can sell 850 or 1800 dual band phones.
I'm on a 50/50 with this 850/1800 thing infact I'm 51/49 with it cuz I honestly believe it's going to be alot of headache.

well phones tipically come in either dual band 850mhz / 1900mhz or 900mhz/1800mhz
tri band 850mhz / 1800mhz / 1900mhz or 900mhz /1800mhz /1900mhz
or quad band ...think of it this way you will never et a dual band or a triband phone that has two low bands
Also you will never get a dual band 850mhz /1800mhz nor a dual band 900mhz/1900mhz so based on this it would be in the best interest of the customers that tstt would sell either triband 850mhz /1800mhz /1900mhz or quad bands phones where by givin the customer the best advantage over the 850mhz over lay
this 850mhz overlay is gonna be great since if at any time the signal gets to low on the defaul band then the phone would switch to the other if its availiable
also if any band were to become congested then the phone would so switch to the other band
