I went in to TSTT Fredrick Street Mobile office today, with all intensions of
switching from TDMA post paid to GSM post paid, expecting that this should be
an easy task, simple procedure and being able to (as TSTT has stated before)
keep my existing number.

After waiting an hour and a half (like I had nothing else better to do) to be attended to, I am told that unfortunately I won't be able to retain my existing number on the GSM system, the problem being that the migration system that
would allow you to transfer your TDMA number to GSM is down and get this!

THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHEN IT WILL BE FUNCTIONING AGAIN!!!

In my dismay I asked will it be a week or two before this will be corrected???
the reply was "it may be even longer we're not sure when exactly"

UNACCEPTABLE from a "supposedly" service oriented company who claims to be
"Going beyond the call" more like going to where they know not what they do.!

I do hope that the government opens the doors for new entrants in the mobile
sector this year, competition will certainly bring better service!

No worry! Do not be in a hurry switching to GSM at all. My past 5 months experience is ... GSM is not yet a functioning service in Trinidad. My montly bill has been reduced since I hardly can use the phone at home (Westmoorings) and of course due to the lower montly price. The price and the special offers were luring me into this deal and I am really disappointed to the max about GSM. It works in certain areas perfectly and might soon offer you the additional services ... but until now ... it does not give anymore functionality than a TDMA phone.

All of the above will change within the next 6 month, or at least I hope so. But getting a GSM before June or so simply doesn't make sense. Except you are in the 'good GSM reception' area and do not roam. And of course it is good for the frequent traveller, once you have the correct frequency for the country abroad (900, 1800, 1900 ... triband).

Well, another reason not to switch right now ... you cannot keep your existing number if your message is correct. Bummer ... life in the tropics ... mixed with technology ... mmmh B)
