I got the opportunity to test the soon to be available GSM GPRS service, which will allow access to Internet services like email etc.

The SIM card has first to be enabled for that!

There are instructions for a number of phones on the TSTT website:
GPRS Setup
First I tested sending/receiving emails directly from the phone, which worked fine. Haven't really checked with a megabyte attachment ...

Then I hooked up my laptop via Bluetooth (serial, infrared will be fine too), which was a bit more tricky as Bluetooth always requested a password or passkey, which I had to lookup on the Internet (0000 for the Sony T68i).
Anyhow, the Bluetooth device pairing worked fine too.
The next step was actually to setup the dialup connection on the computer. Above document stated 99**1#, but it is actually *99***1#
Anyhow, I am actually posting this message here via the GPRS connection.

The bandwidth so far wasn't really what I expected as I thought it would be faster than a standard dialup modem, but it is not bad (30kbps or 3.7 KB/sec).
Well, this is my first connection with GPRS and maybe there is a way to tweak a bit and get a faster connection. Well, and maybe it is the GSM reception in my area as I hardly can use the phone to communicate from here.
Moving the phone to get better reception resulted in:
43.40kbps or 5.42 KB/sec ... not too shabby via a cell phone!

So far ... so good.
Next step would be running around with a laptop and checkout coverage B)

I heard some more good news about the GPRS service. Apparently TSTT will officially launch it by next month or so. They have quite an interesting initial offer for unlimited Internet access via the cell phone ... (I would go with that one). But the offer is limited for the first 2 months and other packages with different fees will follow.
MMS will be launched in a few months too ...

Nope! You pay either for unlimited access (traffic) or per KB up-stream (sent) data. Download/receive is free of charge from what I've heard.
Yes, the phone is always connected to the Internet.

I didn't say I have WAP ... I have GPRS enabled on my T68i and I can send/receive emails and connect my laptop to the Internet using a Bluetooth connection between cell and laptop.

"TSTT does not provide a WAP gateway at this point in time."

I do not have any further information other than I posted before. Maybe ask TSTT.

Now it's official! Wednesday's papers stated 'mzone mobile internet' will soon to be availablity in T&T. With attractive pricing...
With just TT$ 99.00 per month for unlimited access (when signup before September), mzone will be the cheapest unlimited Internet access available in T&T! With comparable speeds to a standard dialup account ... this is a real alternative.
I wonder if the bandwidth in T&T will be sufficient for all the new customers.
And one more good things ... TSTT will put more focus on customer service!
Competition makes life somehow more convenient

I guess you missed the full page ad in the Newsday on June 30th ...

... coming soon
mzone
mobile internet

Well, depending on the phone capabilities:
- email
- browsing
- IM
- file transfer

and you can usually hook up a computer and sue the phone as your modem to the Internet
