FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
INTERNET USERS – BEWARE OF MODEM SWITCH SCAMS
Trinidad -
TSTT wishes to alert all dial-up Internet customers of the Internet Modem Switch Scam. This scam is responsible for the seemingly unexplained overseas calls to countries that customers may not otherwise call, such as Zaire, Sao Tome & Principe and Netherlands – just to name a few.
Our investigations have revealed that customers are being charged for International calls to the above destinations while under the impression that they are connected to a local call to their Internet Service Provider (ISP). Please note that this issue is independent of the ISP from which the customer receives service.
Here is how it works:
The websites encourage computers users to download software in order to gain access or to view content on the web site with “no credit card required”. Our research further reveals that although the details on the applicable charges are listed, in most cases, in the terms of service presented to the Internet user from the web site, customers do not take the time to read and understand these terms of service. The downloaded software disconnects his/her’s computer modem from the local ISP call and reconnects it using an international long distance number, resulting in the overseas charges appearing on the telephone line used for Internet access.
To minimize the risk of this happening to you, TSTT advises the following:
1. Change your password frequently, at least once per month. To change your password go to TSTT’s homepage: http://www.tstt.net.tt
2. Ensure that you have updated antivirus and firewall software installed on your computer. The following links are meant as guides to information and programs that can be used to better protect your computer systems:
Personal firewall – BlackICE Defender: http://www.networkice.com
Personal firewall with network features – ZoneAlarm: http://www.zonelabs.com

Suite for family use – Norton Internet Security 2001 Family Edition: http://symantec.com (Please note that the information presented here is meant only as a guide. Users are advised strongly to read all copyright and other notices from the various programs and sites listed above.)
3.Regularly check and clear your computer systems of all spyware and viruses. The following links are meant as guides to information and programs that can be used to better protect your computer systems:
Spyware removal tool: http://www.adaware.com or http://www.spybot.com
Antivirus protection: http://www.free-av.com or http://www.avg.com
(Please note that the information presented here is meant only as a guide. Users are advised strongly to read all copyright and other notices from the various programs and sites listed above.)
4.Before downloading any software, customers should read the disclaimer to learn what charges are applicable for the use of the content contained there-in. If you still choose to install the software at reference, customers should be prepared to receive a telephone bill with international charges. Please note it has been TSTT’s experience that a significant number of the websites involved in the modem switch scam are pornographic sites, gaming sites, and online gambling. However, there may be others.
TSTT wishes you, our valued customers a safe and enjoyable surfing experience. Thank you for choosing TSTT’s NetXpress. -
