  1. SpeedStream Rebooting, Max Echo Misses, Disconnect

    Posted 11 Sep 2005

    Hi

I started to experience frequent reboots of my SpeedStream 5200 as well as frequent (several times per day) disconnect/reconnect causing a new IP to be assigned and any current session (messenger, downloads etc) to fail.

The 5200, one of the newer E242 models, was rebooting all by itself...all the modem lights would light up, with the power led turning red. The modem is on UPS and other equipment on the same ups like a wireless router etc. were fine, so it wasn't a power failure issue.

Another phenomenon, in the "System Log" under the "Status and Statistics" web page of the SpeedStream, I would get repeated "Max Echo Misses" messages similar to the following

    2005-08-31 00:15:01 E |PPP |Max echo misses

    2005-08-31 00:15:01 E |PPP |LCP down

    2005-08-31 00:15:01 E |PPP |IPCP down

    2005-08-31 00:15:02 E |PPP |LCP neg PAP

    2005-08-31 00:15:02 E |PPP |LCP up

    2005-08-31 00:15:02 E |PPP |IPCP nak option: 3

    2005-08-31 00:15:02 E |PPP |IPCP nak option: 129

    2005-08-31 00:15:02 E |PPP |IPCP nak option: 131

    2005-08-31 00:15:02 E |PPP |IPCP up ip: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx,
    gw: 209.94.205.25, dns: 196.3.132.1, 196.3.132.4

The "DSL Status/Statistics" page showed good SNR and Attenuation.

TSTT replaced the unit with one of the newer models, a SpeedStream 4200, and the problem seems to have gone away. So the conclusion drawn was that the original SpeedStream was faulty somehow.

Just to note, the Power Adapter wasn't changed. This is important to note, as I have see elsewhere that a bad Adapter can cause erratic behaviour in the SpeedStream.

I recommend that you monitor the "System Log" for any such messages, as you may not be otherwise aware of the reboots, disconnects/reconnects.

Siemens/Efficient seems to have their newer model numbers going down. i.e. 5200 to 4200. The differences I could detect is that with the 4200:

    1. A new "Reset to Factory Defaluts" checkbox under the "Reboot" menu in "Tools".
    2. The "DSL" led does not flash anymore when there is data flow. Only the "Activity" led flashes now.
    3. Significantly smaller and more compact.
    4. The leds are smaller and on to of the unit and therefore harder to see from a distance.
