  1. Flow Cable Latency vs. TSTT DSL Latency

    Posted 22 Mar 2009

EDIT: Initial Results - Flow is the clear latency winner

Flow really pulls ahead at peak periods. This could change if Flow gets a larger market share and doesn't keep up with their infrastructure.

Above are the simple average pings done at approximately the same time from the same residence to the same IP (not using domain names, as they sometimes resolve to different IPs.)

I have the fastest residential package for each service. Download speeds are about the same, but Flow's upload is faster - at least when I checked (1.3 MBit vs. 400 Kbit; Blink's upload speed varies a lot, though.)

Update: I am getting 15 Mbit down / 2 Mbit up fairly consistently now after reconfiguring and restarting my router.

    Original Post:

Does anyone have any data for latency between the two services?

For a realisitic comparison the information would have to come from the same general geographic location, to the same IP address (preferably in the US), and around the same time.

Thank you to anyone who has actually done this; if no one posts I may end up getting a Flow account and test myself.
  2. Frequent Short Calls on my Bill - that I've never Called!

    Posted 25 Jan 2009

Reviewing my telephone bill shows daily calls, always less than a minute in length, to a 628-8911 or 628-8912 number (the 628-8911 is much more common.)

These calls are often at 1:30 in the morning (approximately) although they occur at other times as well.

For my last billing period (DEC - early JAN) they occurred every day, sometimes more frequently.

Calling either number results in a 'tone.' Try it; it is strange.

    Thoughts?
  3. Using a 2nd router / wireless access point

    Posted 5 Sep 2006

    Question about doing this:

Has anyone tried using the PPP IP extension option? This apparently uses DHCP to assign the connected router it's IP, gateway, and DNS servers, turns off the NAT & firewall options of the modem (to allow your 2nd router to control these functions exclusively), and turns the modem to be more of a bridge instead of being a router.

Anyone use this method with a paradyne of putting a 2nd router on their network?
  4. Paradyne Issues Resolved

    Posted 5 Sep 2006

I think I've got a solution for the below described problem:

Problem Description: Paradyne modem was dropping DSL connection about every 24 hours. It appeared to have problems renewing the DHCP lease from the PPP server. Diagnostics would say 'PPP down', 'PPP server session failed', etc. A hard reset of the modem followed by re-entering userid/password information would usually result in re-connection to DSL for another 24 hours, after which the problem repeats itself.

Resolution: Under the Advanced / Wan settings, edit your service profile. Change the encapsulation type to VC/MUX. Change the authentication type to PAP using your userid/password. Save & Finish to reboot modem. Problem should disappear.

Good luck with this! This was actually posted by a few other users on this forum, but I thought it deserved it's own topic.
