Granny waits months for phone to ring

Gertrude George is 94 years old and spends her days watching her telephone,
waiting for it to ring. TSTT installed a phone at her home last November,
with the promise it would be activated in a few minutes. She is still
waiting. George lives deep into the Penal Rock Road area in Moruga. She
lives on the ground floor apartment of a home owned by a grandson. George
is angry.

With arthritic knees and failing eyesight she said: "I pay $300 already,
and I am not pleased about this. If you not going to come fix my phone,
give me back my money." George said it was her daughter, Elizabeth, who
lives in the United States, who installed the telephone at her home. "I
never had a phone before. They install the phone and said they going out
the road (to a TSTT installation) and they would call so I would know the
phone working. They never ring. I still waiting."

In the interim, her family made at least seven visits to TSTT's Customer
Service Centre in San Fernando seeking an explanation. "Even my daughter
call from New York asking TSTT to fix the phone. All they say is they
working on it."
George's son-in-law, Cornelieus Morales, said the telephone was her
lifeline in case she fell ill. An official at TSTT's San Fernando branch
told the Express that someone has been assigned to rectify George's
problem, but no time-frame could be given. George said she was grieved
"because that phone was for my daughter and six grandchildren to call me. I
lonely. I don't know what to do. I might get a phone when I 100 years old,
you think?"
