on your landline, while on a call, if a second call comes in you just hear the beeps and know there is another call but you do not know who is calling.

if this feature was on, you would see the caller id of the incoming / waiting call.

Right now, this feature is already on your cell, but has not been enabled on landlines yet.

Maybe they're working on it.

Mobiles and land lines use a different type of signalling to place the call. On landlines, you have to allow one ring tone, then the called id shows up on the second ring as the caller id information is sent during the silent period between the two rings. While on a call, if a second call comes in, there is no place to send the caller-id information. With mobiles, the caller-id data is sent in parallel to the call along a separate channel and then the channel becomes free and available to carry call information.

nice explanation of the technincal aspects, but doesn't really address the original question... this feature is available is most other countries and when you buy a cordless or corded phone in the US (and Trinidad) with the caller id feature, they are all "call waiting caller id" ready, provided of course that your telecoms provider has that service.
ours, (tstt), does not offer this service..
i guess, to re-state my question:-

is this something tstt can not do because of a technology limitation that they have, or is it just something that they just have no interest in offering it (till competition comes from Flow etc)

I'm leaning with the latter reason.
