  1. TSTT's EDGE is officially rubbish

    Posted 10 Mar 2007

Stating the obvious in the title? I guess so. However TSTT's edge service wasn't always bad.

I signed up for their GPRS service in Jan 2005 and while it was slow it was dependable. Then when TSTT introduced EDGE I got hi speeds (100 to 140kbps at least in Sando) from June 2006 to about Dec 2006. no I didn't sign up for a new plan since technically TSTT can't prevent someone from using EDGE. Back to that later though.

Since December 2006 my EDGE service has been abysmal. There is supposed coverage islandwide but my service is SLOWER than a 28.8 connection now. MSN fails to sign in 9 times out of 10. Hotmail takes 10 minutes to load or doesn't at all. Several websites refuse to load at all either. ALL this happens in St Augustine where I live, I kid you not, 50 meters from a frickin cell site. I could literally pelt it with a big stone so I know coverage isn't an issue.

Eventually I find my way to Bmobile in library corner and after much wrangling and testing to see if it was my handset giving trouble, one of the employees confesses that there are too many people on the EDGE network...AND that TSTT is NOT going to invest further money to improve the network. <DELETED>. So they just gonna let a system crawl while advertising in the papers about the supposedly great performance. I can't even reliably check sites using opera mini 3.1 without getting a network connection error every 5 minutes. This poor service happens all day long regardless of how many people actually using the service. Its ridiculous! Somebody need to call back or kidnap and bring back Carlos Espinal cuz we trinis ain't making things better. TSTT going back to the same ole entity slowly.

This brings me to another question. The employee who confessed to me about the network thing possesed a blackberry device and thus he would be using the plan tstt advertises at $260 a month for data. I pay $140 a month for my service. We BOTH suffering on the EDGE network. My question is this: why TSTT making Blackberry owners pay more for the same service which doesn't give them benefits??? From what I gathered, Blackberry devices work on the same network as all other cellphones. Even tstt's EDGE launch announcements in the news section of their websites never distinguished and in fact lumped phones from nokia, motorola and RIM together.

Another question, if I am so close to a cell site in St Augustine why is my latency so high? In Sando I can't see any sites yet my connection works closer to a 40kbps with bursts to 100kbps connection rather than the even worse connection in St. Augustine.

    End Rant.
